redoablepic.jpgThe Redoable 1.1 Theme is a brand new theme by Dean J Robinson that is Wordpress 2.1 compatible and is based on the great K2 theme. It supports sidebar widgets, has built in support for a dozen or more popular plugins and it also has an easy to use admin interface to help configure the theme to suit your needs.

Some of the other new features included in the Redoable 1.1 Theme are; Livesearch built in, a choice of two different single post layouts, and a dynamic style preview feature which allows you to change between dark and light colour schemes directly from the admin area. This is a complete and very usable theme. With all the built in functionality that this theme has, and the extra functionally that the extra plugins give it, I’m sure you will enjoy this theme.

Redoable 1.1 Theme for Wordpess

mistylook3.jpgIt’s great to see that the Misty Look Theme has been upgraded to Version 3. The theme is designed by Sadish on WpThemePark.com and it has some really nice extras.

Custom Header Image

In version 3 you now have the ability to import your own header pictures directly in the presentation admin area. The pictures are then cropped to the right size and it will automatically become the new default header for you blog. This is the first WordPress theme to accommodate ‘Custom Header Image’ feature.

The theme also incorporates many other upgrades, in line with the recent release of WP 2.1, and the full list can been seen here.

Theme Features

MistyLook V3 has a lot packed into it for just one theme. Here is a short list of some of the features of this theme;

  • Sidebar Widgets Compatible.
  • Theme Options page allows you to exclude/sort Pages for the top Navigation bar. Options page also supports Asides. Asides are ‘quick bits’ of information you want to post. They do not have to look like a regular post.
  • Includes Page Template for an Archives Page. Just create a new page and use ‘Archives’ as the Page Template.
  • Includes Page Template for a Contact Page. Just create a new page and use ‘Contact’ as the Page Template.
  • Includes Page Template for the Links Page, so you can display all the links you have in a separate page.
  • 404 Template and Search Template too.

All in all, this is a great update to an already great theme. MistyLook is one of the highest downloaded themes on the Wordpress Theme Viewer site at the moment. It is also cool to see this theme being used by some of the Top Bloggers, such as John Chow dot Com blog and many others.

I would highly recommend this theme to anyone looking for a good solid theme. It looks great, it’s cleanly coded, has nice page templates and lots of cool features built-in. Recommended. :)

Wordpress Wordpress 2.1 is now officially released and features a lot more under the hood than even I had realized. This Wordpress version is a real milestone in the blogging world as it has a lot of features directly requested by the users on their Ideas Board. The developers go on to say that we are likely to see a lot more frequent Wordpress releases in the future, with the next major update scheduled for April 23rd!

Here is a feature list of what’s new in the latest 2.1 version of Wordpress:

  • New Akismet plugin is bundled. This is the latest V1.2.1 Askimet anti-spam plugin which is necessary in combating blog spam today. It now features an option to automatically discard spam comments on posts older than a month. Great Plugin.
  • Autosaving of Posts when writing makes sure you never lose a post again. Very handy.
  • Tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG mode and code editing mode instantly while writing a post. The visual editor also now includes spell checking.
  • Lossless XML import and export will make it easy to move your content between WordPress blogs.
  • Search Engine privacy option allows you to indicate whether your blog should or shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines.
  • Any Page can be set to be the front page of your site. This makes it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system. This is a great feature.
  • More efficient database code.
  • Links in the blogroll now support sub-categories.
  • Redesigned login screen.
  • Pages can now be drafts, or private.
  • Admin Area loads faster.
  • The upload manager lets you easily manage all your uploads pictures, video, and audio.

I just came across the news on Dan Masters blog that the final version of WordPress 2.1 is due to be released today. I have been testing out the latest Release Canidate (RC1) version from boren.nu’s blog recently and I have to say I’m very pleased with it.

The new admin area looks similar, visually, as the default Wordpress 2.0 style but it has been upgraded in several ways. On the whole the new changes make this new version feel a lot more modern and more zen-like, which is good.

There are also some extra features built-in to this new 2.1 version, such as the ability to create static front pages which really helps WordPress to be used as a fully fledged CMS more easily. This new Wordpress 2.1 version is set to definitely be the best version of WordPress, so far. I’m looking forward to the official release of Wordpress 2.1, today hopefully. :)

Live Website Activity PluginLive is a nice WordPress plugin by HeadZoo.com that lets you watch your website activity and various website stats in real time. You can watch as people are visiting your pages, leaving comments and grabbing your RSS feeds.

The Live plugin site activity display is similar to that of Digg Spy. Each page hit, RSS hit, and comment slowly scrolls in the admin area in a smooth motion. It also includes a hit graph that dynamically shows you how much traffic your site is getting over a period of time.

You can download the latest 0.4.1 version of the Live Plugin now from the download page.

WordTubeIf you would like to show video on your blog in the style of Google Video or YouTube then the new Wordpress plugin WordTube by Alex Rabe is for you. Alex has done a great job in creating this plugin as it makes the process of adding and managing media files such as Videos, MP3s and even pictures very easy. This plugin can transform your blog into a complete Media Center if you wanted to!

WordTube supports the following;

  • streaming Video formats .flv and .swf,
  • sound files such as MP3
  • and also JPG, GIF or PNG picture files.

With WordTube activated in your plugins admin area, you simply insert the tag [MEDIA=ID] into your blog to have it displayed. You can also add a playlist of files when you use the [MYPLAYLIST] tag. You don’t need to change the WYSIWYG mode or have special HTML knowledge to insert such a tag. You can show a single media file (i.e. a flv video) or a playlist of all your media files.

How To Encode A Flash Video

There are several ways to encode your videos so that the can be streamed using the WordTube plugin. You can use the Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash Video Encoder (included in the Stanard installation) or the free version of RIVA FLV Encoder. It’s really easy to encode your Mpeg,Avi or whatever into a flash video (the FLV format).

Installation

Unpack the zip file and upload the folder to your Wordpress plugins folder. You will also need the free (for personal use) Flash Media Player plugin from Jeroen Wijering. Download the player from the website and upload the file mediaplayer.swf into the WordTube plugin folder. If you would like to have the Equalizer displayed for MP3s then download the Flash MP3 Player as well. The plugins can now be activated.

Uploading Media Files

You can upload your media files via the Manage->Media Center Upload form or you can manually upload to your blog and select the URL to the file. The file you want to play doesn’t need to be on your server. Note for streaming videos; The Flash player will not show a thumbnail preview so you will need to upload a image thumbnail file. After uploading you can insert the tag [MEDIA=ID] or you show the playlist with the tag [MYPLAYLIST] in your blog.
