WordPress 3.0 has finally been released after nearly a half a year of work by 218 contributors and it is now available for download or for  upgrade from within your admin dashboard!

Some of the major new features of this release includes a new default theme called Twenty Ten. So it’s Bye, bye to the old Kubrick theme but hello to a newer and modern theme which shows off a lot cool stuff such as typography, etc.

As users we will appreciate the new lighter interface with contextual help on every screen. Another nice touch is the bulk update feature so you can upgrade multiple plugins at once with a single click and loads more interface improvements.

First impressions are great about this WordPress 3 release so far. I’ve tested the RC3 release candidate and by the speed the official WordPress 3 has followed, I can assume the developers are confident too. The interface seems zippier to use which is good and I’m sure there’s loads of tweaks included as well.

Redirection is a plugin to manage 301 redirections on your WordPress blog, and has just been updated to version 2.1.27. As well as 301 redirection, this plugin keeps track of all your 404 errors and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is also useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

Some of the new features include;

• 404 error monitoring – capturing a log of 404 errors
• Custom ‘pass-through’ redirections allowing you to pass a URL through to another page, file, or website.
• Full logs for all redirected URLs
• All URLs can be redirected, not just ones that don’t exist
• Redirection methods – redirect based upon login status, redirect to random pages, redirect based upon the referrer!

Existing features of the Redirection plugin include:

• Automatically add a 301 redirection when a post’s URL changes
• Manually add 301, 302, and 307 redirections for a WordPress post, or for any other file
• Full regular expression support
• Apache .htaccess is not required – works entirely inside WordPress
• Strip or add www to all your WordPress pages
• Redirect index.php, index.html, and index.htm access
• Redirection statistics telling you how many times a redirection has occurred, when it last happened, who tried to do it, and where they found your URL
• Fully localized

A great new WordPress theme called Calotropis is now available. The WP theme has a wonderful amount of selectable layout options such as; right or left sidebar or no sidebar, magazine style or traditional style, and many more options.

In fact, it’s hard to believe that this is a free wordpress theme because of all of the theme options that are available, it’s like it’s a premium theme!

The latest 1.1.1 version of the Calotropis Theme has added more new features. A tabbed column widget is included and a new Favicon feature, which means you can set your own desired favicon. If not set, the default favicon used, very handy.
