Blog Themes, Plugins, Tips, Tutorials and More!

The latest version of Wordpress 2.9.2 is now released. It is a minor bug-fix release and it is recommended to upgrade to version 2.9.2, especially if your blog has multiple authors on it. This release fixes a problem where logged in users can peek at trashed posts belonging to other authors. So, if you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2.

As always, you can visit the Tools->Upgrade menu to automatically upgrade from within your blog. Alternatively, you can download the latest 2.9.2 version from the Wordpress.org website and replace all the files on your server, using your favorite FTP program. It’s much easier to upgrade from within the admin menu, but, as always, it’s wise to do a database backup before upgrading!

The WordPress development team has just announced the immediate availability of WordPress version 2.9. You can upgrade easily from within your Dashboard by going to Tools > Upgrade, or you can download from WordPress.org directly.

This version is a major release and so they have prepared a short video summarizing some of the cool things about the new Wordpress 2.9.

Here is a list of some of the major additions from a user point of view.

  • Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  • Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.
  • Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one.
  • Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

Remember you can  download the new Wordpress 2.9  from the WordPress.org website.

WordPress Wins CMS Award

wordpressWordPress has just been awarded the Overall Best Open Source CMS Award in the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. It is the first time that Wordpress has won this award and it marks a major shift in the public perception of WordPress, from blog software to full-featured CMS.

The Open Source CMS Awards received over 12,000 nominations and more than 23,000 votes across five categories. In addition to winning in the Overall Best Open Source CMS category, WordPress was named first runner-up in the Best Open Source PHP CMS category.

As is stated on the Award site, “WordPress made its way into the top five for the first time. The fact that it was outranked by Drupal by a very slight margin indicates how popular it has become with users as well as developers over the past year.”

Congratulations to all!

wordpress2.8The lastest Wordpress version 2.8.6, is now released. Wordpress 2.8.6 fixes two security problems that have been found. wordpress2.8There has been a lot of Wordpreess releases lately and I haven’t reported them here until there was a good solid version to mention. Especially as in the last version of Wordpress, 2.8.3, there was a comment reset exploit which had somehow surfaced in the WordPress 2.8.x branch code.

Now the lastest Wordpress version 2.8.4, is now released, lets hope it is bug free and worthy of upgrading to.

Although, it should be mentioned that the Wordpress team were on the problem very fast as a result of lots of Twitter messages that had mentioned the comment reset exploit.

Another great use for Twitter, lol!

You can download the lastest Wordpress version 2.8.4 here, or if you have any Wordpress 2.7+ version, you can upgrade from within your admin panel.

wpWordPress 2.8.1 is now available for download. Version 2.8.1 is mainly a bug-fix release and, as such, it is recommended to upgrade as soon as possible. Upgrading is simplicity itself, though, as you can do it by just clicking the upgrade to 2.8.1 link in the admin dashboard!

Most of the fixes in WordPress 2.8.1 were to fix security holes, reduce memory usage, fix problems with the rich text editor, automatic upgrade script, upload and auto-save errors.

wordpress2.8The latest version of WordPress 2.8 is now available for download. Wordpress 2.8 features improvements to themes, widgets, taxonomies and overall speed.

Wordpress 2.8 feels and looks a lot like Wordpress 2.7 with some minor tweaks. However, once you dig in you’ll begin to appreciate the changes. For example, Wordpress 2.8 is a lot faster to use in the admin backend. Also, you can now browse the entire theme directory and install a theme from your admin screen, with just one click!

Wordpress 2.8 also features a re-designed widgets interface to do things like; edit widgets on the fly, have multiple copies of the same widget, drag and drop widgets between sidebars, and save inactive widgets so you don’t lose all their settings.

I recommend everyone upgrade their Wordpress installations to this latest version. The speeded up admin area makes it all worthwhile!

Wordpress 2.7.1 is now available for downlad. This version is a maintenance release and fixes a number of minor issues that were found within Wordpress 2.7. You can automatically upgrade from 2.7 to 2.7.1 from within your Wordpress 2.7 Admin panel via the Tools/Upgrade menu, or you can download the package and do the upgrade manually.

So while this is just a maintenance release, it is not necessary to update immediately as no major security issues are involved. However, if you like to keep fully up to date with Wordpress it is a good idea to do so.

It is easier that ever to update Wordpress by using the admin panel feature.
